As the story of FEMA fraud in systematic alteration of Sandy claim documentation reports continues to unfold in the media, it seems odd that President Obama would choose this time to recognize the agency for its disaster preparedness. On May 31 the White House issued this press release praising the agency.
One thing I am learning from additional reading is that fraud is prevalent in all disasters and is perpetrated by government, insurance companies, repair contractors and other entities alike. Assuming that the criminal allegations are true in this matter, it is still not clear why this government agency would apparently design and condone systematic fraudulent procedures that benefits private insurance companies at the expense of individual policyholders. In other words, it is not clear what benefit FEMA agency officials derived by allowing employees to altering or forging third engineering reports and other similar crimes.
